She was appointed cheese maker at Spring Creek Cheese Factory and Creamery, Madoc in 1891 when she was only 22. It is not clear where she learned to make cheese. She might have apprenticed with Mrs. Jack Robertson of Brook Valley Cheese Factory in Madoc. She taught her husband John R. West and her sons, Elliot, John and William, how to make cheese and butter. For many years her husband was cheese maker at Harold. Her son William moved to Stirling in 1926 and ran the Stirling Creamery which is still in operation.
